After 36 Years an Ectopic Fetus Removed From A Woman in India

Viral Stuff and Trending News
Fetus formed outside the uterus

An ectopic pregnancy happens when fertilized eggs implant anywhere outside the uterus. They occur once every 50 pregnancies and can potentially be life-threatening. A very rare exceptions exist that is viable in most fetuses that stem from ectopic pregnancies.

The Times of India, reported few days ago that a 60-year-old woman amazingly received a surgery to remove a fetus from an ectopic pregnancy she had back in 1978. The woman had been complaining of abdominal pain for a period of two months leading up to the surgery. She had a conspicuous stiff mass and initially suspected it to be cancerous. It led her to immediately undergo imaging and series of tests. The imaging exposed that the mass was not cancer; it was the calcified skeletal remains of a fetus.
”It was after the patient underwent a MRI that the doctors could make out that the mass was in fact a child's skeleton," Murtaza Akhtar, head of surgery, told The Times of India.

Her pregnancy was conceived when she was 24 years old, her pregnancy was ectopic and she unsuspectingly miscarried. During that time, doctors from her city had told her she needed immediate attention. Instead of seeking medical help she went home to her village, and receive from a local healer. It is likely unknown how far exactly along the pregnancy took place before it spontaneously removed. Live Science reports that this could be a case of stone baby, or otherwise known as lithopedion. The mother’s body might not have been able to readily reabsorb the embryonic tissue, regarding on the size of the fetus. A layer of calcium rather begins to form in the region of the fetus, in order to prevent infection to the mother. This is extraordinary in more developed areas, as most ectopic fetuses are removed right away.

This is probably the longest recorded time period a woman has carried around ectopic fetal leftovers. In Belgium, the doctors found similar case from in which a woman undergo surgery to remove the skeleton after 18 years, making this case of an Indian woman of 36 years completely unprecedented.
