The “kindest thing to do” to a sick pet goldfish is to (flush it down the toilet), but this lucky little guy’s owner clearly thought it deserved better. After developing a tumor which is life-threatening tumor, George the gold-fish was taken to see a some medical attention. Dr. Tristan Rich at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in Melbourne, Australia conducted the procedure.

The mounting tumor was affecting George’s quality of life as he was stressed to eat and was being bullied by his fellow, well… gold-fish, so he gave the owner two options: surgery or euthanasia, according to Rich.
A dedicated sole, George’s owner took the oppor-tuna-ty to save his 10-year-old pet and opted for surgery. It cost the owner $200, the 45-minute operation involved putting George under general anesthesia before cutting out the tumor on his head. An oxygenated pond water was continuously pumped through his gills to keep him alive during surgery. Watch the video below during the operation:
Rich told Melbourne’s 3AW radio station that George is recovering and is now “up and about and swimming around without any bullying from his fellow... goldfish.” Thanks to the procedure, he might live for another 20 years.
